ONLINE TESL CERTIFICATION (Teaching English as a Second Language)
The online TESL certification is a 12 week course that is equivalent to the 120 hour in class course. This 12 week course allows students to work at their own pace and their own time. In this online course, student teachers will learn about the fundamentals of teaching English as a second language.
Each week presents a new, varied module that focuses on the cutting edge theories and practices in the ESL world. By completing this course and being awarded a certificate, you can show potential employers that you have the skills, abilities and charisma to get ahead in the competitive world of Teaching English as a second language. With a certificate in this course, you can teach English as a second language in Canada, or abroad with a world renowned certificate.
Duration: 12 weeks + Practicum
Format: The material will be presented in the form of downloadable resources, online discussions, online group work, peer teaching practice, and reading assignments. Because the course is geared toward learning to teach communicatively, many of the class assignments will emphasize participation in discussions, participation, and presentation. Participation is considered mandatory. Any student who misses more than five group assignments will not receive certification.
Delivery: Course material is distributed via Moodle LMS. Students who sign up to the course will receive a moodle pass code. Using this LMS system, students are able to download/upload homework, readings, view marks, communicate with instructors.
Homework: There will be around 2 hours of homework that needs to be done every day. This will add up to 10 hours per week, and after 12 weeks, 120 hours. The homework includes: Readings, planning, completing case studies, lesson plans, written assignments, and peer teaching.
TESL Tutor: Inlingua Victoria will provide a TESL tutor to help you along your journey. Every Monday and Friday will present the opportunity to meet with your TESL tutor. Your TESL tutor will watch your practice lessons, give feedback, conduct tutorials, and answer questions about the content or course.
Practicum: There is two parts of the practicum. The first part is the classroom observations. On week 10, student teachers will be given the opportunity to observe live inlingua Victoria classes. Students may choose to watch the classes online, or come to the school and watch them in person. With each course that you watch, you must also submit an observation log. In total, each student is accountable for observing 10 hours of classes.
The second part of the practicum is in class teaching. Students may choose to complete up to 50% of their practicum online, however we recommend that as much in-class teaching is done as possible. During this period of time, student teachers are assigned a sponsor or mentor teacher who will guide them and give feedback about the lessons that the conduct in their class. This part of the practicum is the most important and most rewarding part of the whole course.
Upon graduation, a student teacher who passes the course will receive the inlingua TESL certification and be eligible to apply for a TESL Canada standard 1 certificate.

I was encouraged by Lilla to pursue a teaching opportunity overseas in Taiwan, and she provided me advice for my interview well after my course was complete. This led me to teaching in Taiwan, South Korea and now currently a Masters of Education based off of my teaching experiences overseas. Without Lilla, I may not have had the courage to achieve my dreams.
We as students were always active participants in every class, there was never a time where I didn’t feel engaged and invested in the course. It is almost as though the course is taught the way we should teach an ESL course—lots of student involvement and lots of stimulus.
The classroom size was great for the course, with fewer than 10 students. Lilla could provide individual attention when it was needed. The course prepared me well to teach small classes aimed at adults at the lower-beginner to intermediate level and I was comfortable during my practicum as a result.
